Description : In addition to its bitter principles, that herbalists held "responsible" for its beneficial effects on the digestive and hepatobiliary system, dandelion contains a surprising variety of minerals, vitamins and other components that could explain some of its traditionally assigned properties. It is particularly rich in potassium and contains large amounts of iron, calcium, copper, manganese and silica, as well as fatty acids, inulin, choline, vitamin B complex, vitamins C and K, as well as flavonoids and carotenoids.
The Commission E recognizes the use of dandelion roots to stimulate biliary function, to improve urinary function, to treat lack of appetite and minor digestive disorders and ESCOP recognizes their use to stimulate bladder and liver functions, to treat minor digestive disorders and loss of appetite.
We do not yet understand by which mechanism the leaves of dandelion gave a diuretic action. By cons, it was observed that due to its richness in potassium, it has an advantage over other diuretics, that is to say that, unlike most of them, it do not cause a deficit in potassium. In fact, a dandelion cure may instead result in a net gain of potassium.
