Description : The skullcap is known to calm the agitation in children, relieve nervousness, insomnia, nerve pains and premenstrual pains.
In the late eighteenth century, the skullcap was part of many pharmaceutical preparations intended to promote sleep, to calm hysterical crisis and epileptic convulsions and treat rabies and various neurological disorders. This plant has therapeutic properties for the treatment of neuralgic pain and for functional disorders of the nervous system. There are no clinical studies that could confirm or refute the effectiveness that traditional herbalists attribute to the skullcap. Some people assumed however that its effects on the central nervous system are due to its high content in flavonoid pigments. Chinese researchers have identified, in skullcap, flavonoids which in the human body bind on the same receptors in the central nervous system as benzodiazepines, these synthetic molecules that form the active ingredient in a variety of modern tranquilizers.
